WHO IS THE PERSON BEHIND THE SHOW?
my name is Raymond Morales. I am the founder, host and executive producer of the show. i began broadcasting my first semester as an MD/PhD student in biochemistry at the university of illinois. I am a Porto Rock from the south bronx.
what is the show?
the show is a mixture of media and arts from an urban latino perspective with an emphasis on hip hop. With that said, i have featured chorus lines, a capella groups, salsa dancers, poets, guitarists, orchestras, jazz ensembles, rock bands, , i have also conducted interviews with scholars from all walks of life and featured lectures, monologues, street interviews, debates, concerts and more.
i just started to produce short documentaries such as Ill Poets society. in essence, the show is all the things
how and when did the show start?
the show began on the radio by happenstance. During the 2005 QUAD DAY (BIG RSO event on UIUC Campus in august), I was recruited to participate in a brand new community radio station. when i first joined radio free urbana, the radio station and the tower were not yet completed. i attended the first few meetings uncertain that anything would ever come out of it. thanks to a barnraising in november 13, 2005, wrfu was able to conduct its first broadcast. I actually completed my first broadcast via automation on friday, november 18, 2005 since i was actually at the american heart association conference.
HOW DID YOU START ON TV?
it was not until june 2007, after a whirlwind of experiences, that i produced my first tv episode of the show with guests +aziz, sammy and chris in the wrfu studio. The video quality was horrible. You could barely see faces. it was extremely low-budget. I would slowly improve all aspects of production from editing to lighting and continue to film radio broadcasts for tv. i began airing episodes on youtube and on urbana public tv cable channel 6. eventually, I discovered that I could air tv episodes on the university of illinois tv cable channel 7. Out of nowhere, i was on the radio friday nights and on tv mondays and wednesday nights.
from nationally renowned artists to local activists, i have been able to feature scholars from all walks of life. to be honest, doing radio & tv is a lot of fun. you get to meet a lot of dynamic people. you get to see amazing artists perform live for free.
what records has the show broken?
the show has been a privilege for me. with that said, i am grateful to everyone who has helped me accomplish these firsts and so many others that people will never know:
first md/phd to have a radio & tv community program that is completely independent of the university while pursuing both degrees.
first md/phd in the sciences to complete over 250+ radio broadcasts and 100+ tv broadcasts while pursuing both degrees.
first md/phd in the sciences to produce a poetry album and obtain his phd in the same semester.
first md/phd to do a full broadcast live on the radio from a pizza shop in champaign-urbana.
what can you expect from the show?
expect the unexpected. i've never sought to entertain or model anyone else. i try to make dope art that i can be proud of. i'm not where i want to be just yet but this is a great journey and i look forward to climbing the next mountain.
